All About the Bride Part 2: Trinkets, Wedding Custom

"Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue"

This was a very old tradition that many brides follow. Even me! Hehehe.
And just to share, here is some trivia about this wedding custom:

The complete phrase is:
Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue

And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

A sixpence is a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. It was made of silver and worth six pennies. So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

As for the colorful item, blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

So, What did I have for Something Old?

>>> I wore my old trusted and sexy bra. hehehe. This was not planned though. Because the supposedly built-in pads did not look good on my gown so we have to find another option. Good thing though, I brought extra undergarments as I always used to whenever i'm spending more than a night or two outside our home. See that protruding cleavage, it's because of the B thing! :P

What did I have for Something New?

>>> Well....many!!! Majority of things I wore obviously were all NEW! :P One of my ever favorite was ofcourse another butterfly!!!! My butterfly bangle. I've been really looking for a nice bangle as my accessory for the wedding. I don't want a necklace, nor a dangling earring. I just want my look to be the simplest as possible. But as the bangle/bracelet person that I am, ofcourse, I should have to and need to have one. And it must not be just any bangle but a really "IT" bangle. So I searched and searched for a trendy, elegant and so-it's-me-bangle since Q1 or Q2 of 2009. But nothing I found that matches my taste. And as the wedding comes nearer and nearer, I kinda convince myself to just settle for what was available that was closest to my taste. Can you feel my disappointment during that time? hehehe. But I think, God really loves me because, as I walked to another stall in Trinoma, the Pop Culture section at the 2nd level named "Girl Shoppe" (i guess), and there!!! I finally found it! It was a beautiful butterfly bangle waiting for me at the shelf. Hehehe. It felt like I won a lottery when I found it. (exage!!! hahaha)

What did i have for Something Borrowed?

>>> A diamond earring from my Office mate turned God Mother, Monette! (Thanks Mother!!! Mwah! Mwah! Mwah!) Oh yes! She was so generous enough to lend me one of her diamond earrings. She even got them out of the deposit vault from the bank. So, aren't they simply gorgeous? And I'm sure even without so much bling and glitzy beads on my gown, I'm sure apart from eyes, I twinkled and sparkled with those earrings on me. :P

What did i have for Something Blue?

>>> Another undergarment! Hahaha. Ofcourse! I just can't wear any Blue that was visible by sight! Why? Obviously, our motif was Fuchsia Pink and Mocha Brown. How on earth will Blue fit those colors. Simply out of tune right? So, just to follow that wedding custom, I simply had another undergarment of shade of blue. :P (well well well, I am not that eccentric to post a picture of that actual undergarment here. NO WAY!)
